The Kottiyoor Shiva Temple, located in the dense forests of the Western Ghats in Kannur district, Kerala, is one of the most ancient and spiritually powerful Shiva temples in South India. Revered as Dakshina Kashi (the Kashi of the South), Kottiyoor is deeply connected to the legendary Daksha Yaga from Hindu mythology. According to tradition, this is the sacred site where Sati Devi sacrificed herself after being insulted at her father Daksha’s yajna, which led to Lord Shiva’s cosmic fury and the destruction of the ritual. It is believed that Lord Shiva later manifested here as a Swayambhu (self-born) Shiva Linga, making the land eternally holy.
